What Is the Main Prayer of Orthodox Christians?

Words That Every Russian Had to Know

One my friend asked me to put here the main prayer of Ortodox Christian. It is called «Отче Наш», means «Pater Noster» (in Latin), «Our Father» in English.

This prayer is the main prayer in Christianity. According to the Gospel, Jesus Christ gave it to his disciples at the request to teach them how to pray. It was the part of his Sermon on the Mount and it is written in Mattew 6:9-13.

This is the original at Slaviansky (old Russian) language:

Отче наш, Иже еси́ на небесе́х!
Да святи́тся имя Твое́,
да прии́дет Ца́рствие Твое,
да будет воля Твоя,
я́ко на небеси́ и на земли́.
Хлеб наш насу́щный даждь нам днесь;
и оста́ви нам до́лги наша,
я́коже и мы оставля́ем должнико́м нашим;
и не введи́ нас во искушение,
но изба́ви нас от лука́ваго.

In modern Russian it can be translated like that:

Отче наш, сущий на небесах! (Our Father which art in heaven)

пусть святится имя Твое (Hallowed be thy name)

пусть наступит царствие Твое (Thy kingdom come)

да будет воля Твоя как на небе, так и на земле (Thy will be done in earth, as [it is] in heaven)

хлеб наш насущный дай нам на сей день (Give us this day our daily bread)

и прости нам долги наши, (And forgive us our debts)

как и мы прощаем должникам нашим (as we forgive our debtors)

и не введи нас в искушение, (And lead us not into temptation)

но избавь нас от лукавого (but deliver us from evil)

Ибо Твое есть Царство и сила и слава во веки. (For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever)

Аминь. (Amen)

We have a common phrase – выучи как Отче Наш (learn it like Our Father)  – which means learn it very very well. In ancient Russia everyone had to learn it very well, from this prayer a lot of people started to learn how to read as well.

At the player above you can listen to Отче Наш with nice quality. Here you can download other version of “Отче Наш” form Sretensky Monastery of Moscow.

Hope you can learn little bit Russian from it 🙂

  1. Thank you for posting this. It sounds much more beautiful in Russian than it does in English!
