Usually there are three official distinctive features of every country: National Flag, Coat of Arms and Anthem. In this article we will tell about national Russian symbols – Russian flag (Tricolor), Russian Coat of Arms (Double-Headed Eagle) and modern Russian Anthem.
1. Russian Flag
Russian flag is a Tricolor with three equal lines: white (top), blue (middle) and red (bottom). Historically, it was the flag of sea merchant ships of the Russian Empire, and later, from 1696, was the flag of the Tsardom of Russia. Since 1991 after breaking of the Soviet Union this flag has become a national flag of Russian Federation.
What do these three colors mean?
White and blue colors have traditionally been popular among Russian people – peasants from the Ukraine and Belarus to the Volga used to dress white and blue shirts. Also, white color is the color of the winter snow, which covers Russia for a long time in the year. Red – on the folk Russian language means “beautiful”, has usually been a festive color for Russians.
2. Russian National emblem
Russian national emblem is Double-Headed Eagle. Actually, this symbol is very common – you can meet it in the history of different countries. The oldest can be found at Hittite Empire (20th century BC). Then Double-Headed Eagle has been used on flags and banners of different great Empires (Seljuk Empire, Holy Roman Empire and etc.). After breaking of Roman Empire this emblem became a symbol of monarchy’s power at Byzantine Empire (Palaiologos Dynasty).
After political marriage (1472) of Russian Tzar Ivan III to Sophia Palaiolognia (a niece of the last Byzantine emperor Constantine XI Palaiologos) Double-Headed Eagle has become a symbol of Russian Tzars as well. During the whole period of existence of Russian Empire it was a symbol that Emperor is having authority over both secular and religious matters. Also it shows the unity of the Asian and European parts of Russia – one of an eagle’s head is looking to the West, the other to the East, but generally they are united.
The State Eagle held a golden scepter and golden globus cruciger – these are the symbols of Russian Monarchy. Eagle is crowned with two imperial crowns, over which the same third crown, enlarged, with two flying ends of the ribbon of the Order of Saint Andrew. At the center of the Eagle is an old symbol of Moscow (the capital of Russia since 1327), depicting Saint George, mounted and defeating the dragon.
So, modern Coat of Arms of Russia – Double-Headed Eagle – has always been a sacred symbol of Russian Empire abolished with the Russian Revolution in 1917 and restored in 1993 with the beginning of a modern history of Russian Federation.
3. National Anthem of Russia
National Anthem of Russia is actually an adoption of the Anthem of Soviet Union (the same music but different lyrics). It has been established officially at 2000 by the bill of Vladimir Putin and approval of State Duma of Russian Federation (Senate). Music was created by Alexander Alexandrov in 1939, lyrics – by Sergey Mikhalkov (the same poet who wrote lyrics of the Anthem of Soviet Union) in 2000.
Here are the lyrics of modern National Anthem of Russian Federation:
