Demonstrative Pronouns этот, тот

The Russian word это does not change for gender and number. Its English counterpart is the construction “this is”, “it is”, “that is” or “these (those) are”.

Examples:

Это – студент. This is a student.

Это – студентка. This is a student.

Это письмо. This is a letter.

The demonstrative pronoun этот (эта, это, эти) changes for gender and number and its English counterpart is the pronoun “this” or “these”.

Examples:

Этот студент читает, а тот студент слушает песню.

This student is reading and that student is listening to a song.

The pronouns этот and тот take the same gender and noun they qualify. Like the pronoun этот, the pronoun тот changes gender and number: тот (masculine), та (feminine), то (neutral), те (plural).

Те люди смеются. Those people are laughing.

Тот человек разговаривает. That person is talking.
